Badger James Wells wins the 200m backstroke at the Canada Cup

Day two of the Canada Cup in Montréal, Que. took place today, spotlighting some of Canada’s fastest athletes.

The 200m backstroke capped off tonights finals. Oakville Aquatic Club’s Annie Harrison took the win in a swift 2:13.86. Harrison took the lead in the race at the 100m mark and held on to secure the win over 15-year-old Meryn McCann from the Etobicoke who grabbed the silver in 2:14.41. NCAA All-American and Canadian national team member Marni Oldershaw finished fifth in the final representing Club Wolverine. Harrison is the 13-14 year-old Canadian record holder in the event.

James Wells from Badger Swim Club took the win in the mens 200m backstroke, throwing down a 2:01.87 for the win. Also in the final were two of Canada’s top youth up-and-comers:Tristan Cote and Matthew MyersMyers, a backstroke specialist, finished second in 2:02.47 behind WellsCote finished in sixth with a time of 2:09.51. Cote had a great freshman season at the University of Calgary taking home a CIS title in the 1500m freestyle, and a third place finish in the 400m IM. Badger Swimmer, Patrick Conaton, nominated to Youth Olympic Team

“USA Swimming today announced the six swimmers and two staff members who will represent Team USA at the second summer edition of the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China. All team nominations are subject to approval by the United States Olympic Committee, which will announce the full roster later this month.
The swimming portion of the Games is scheduled for Aug. 17-22 at the Nanjing Olympic Sports Center. 

The three women nominated to represent Team USA in Nanjing include Hannah Moore (Cary, N.C.), Courtney Mykkanen (Tustin, Calif.) and Clara Smiddy (Miami, Fla.).

On the men’s side, Patrick Conaton (Larchmont, N.Y.), Patrick Mulcare (Tigard, Ore.) and Justin Wright (Fresno, Calif.) have been nominated to the Youth Olympic Team.”

Congratulations to Coach John Collins!

Congratulations to Coach John Collins for being named Senior Coach of the year for Metro Swimming. He was also named the Senior Co-Chair of Metro Swimming!

Public School Athletic League Championships

Badger senior, Eric Wang, won three gold medals and set two records at the PSAL Swimming Championships this season. Eric won gold in the 50 freestyle with a time of 22.16 and placed second in the 100 fly with a time of 51.40; he qualified for NYS Championships in both individual events. He was also an integral member of the gold medal 200 medley and 200 freestyle record setting relays (Francis Lewis HS).

Section 8 Championships

Joe “JJ” Mo, Badger sophmomore from Great Neck South, qualified for NYS Championship twice at the Section 8 Championships this season. JJ placed third in the 200IM with a time of 1.59.66. JJ also placed third in the 100 butterfly with a time of 53.91.
